The two most common binding methods for catalogs, booklets and magazines are saddle stitch and perfect binding. Choosing the wrong one costs money at best — at worst your page count won't be manufacturable. This guide gets you to a decision in three dimensions.

What is saddle stitch
Printed sheets are folded, nested and stapled through the fold with two wire staples. Most magazines, company brochures and manuals use it.
Pros: lowest cost, fastest turnaround, opens fully flat at 180° (great for spread designs). Cons: page count is capped (too many sheets can't be stapled), no spine to print on.
Page rule (important): total pages must be a multiple of 4 — one folded sheet equals 4 pages. The cover always counts as 4P (front cover, inside front, inside back, back cover), and inner pages must also round to a multiple of 4. If your file doesn't comply, production adds blank pages automatically and pricing follows the padded count.
