Counting Booklet Pages: P, Sheets, and the Multiple-of-4 Rule
"How many pages is my booklet, really?" Mixing up pages, sheets and sides causes more ordering mistakes than anything else. Here it is, once and for all.
Basic conversion
- 1P = 1 page face (one side you see when the book is open)
- 1 sheet printed both sides = 2P
- A "20-page" booklet in industry terms usually means 20P, i.e. 10 sheets duplex
How the cover counts
A booklet cover always counts as 4P: front cover, inside front, inside back, back cover. Even if the inside faces stay blank, the physical sheet is 4 page faces. So:
Total P = cover 4P + inner P
The saddle-stitch multiple-of-4 rule
Saddle stitching folds whole sheets — one folded sheet = 4 pages, so inner pages must be a multiple of 4 (4, 8, 12, 16…).
If your inner content is 10P, production pads 2 blank pages to make 12P, and pricing follows 12P. That's not a surcharge — it's physics: you can't print two and a half sheets.
Perfect binding has no such rule; inner pages in multiples of 2 are fine.
FAQ
Q: Can the cover count as 2P? A: No. The cover is one full folded sheet — physically always 4P, even with only two designed faces.
Q: What if my inner pages are 35P? A: Saddle stitch normalizes to 36P (1 blank page added); or adjust your layout to 32P/36P for better value.
